António Morgado’s Daring Solo Attack Seals Victory at Figueira Champions Vintage

António Morgado (UAE Staff Emirates-XRG) powered clear of the big-name contenders within the peloton with 21km to race to turned into the primary Portuguese winner at Figueira Champions Vintage in Figueira da Foz.

The Portuguese time trial champion blasted to the end to win his moment race of the early season. He opened 2025 with victory at GP Castellón-Ruta de l. a. Cerámica.

A discounted crew of nineteen riders gave chase, with Paul Magnier (Soudal-QuickStep) taking the bunch dash for moment, forward of Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) and Sam Watson (Ineos Grenadiers).

The 3rd version of Figueira Champions Vintage served as the outlet contest of the 12 months for plenty of notable riders, together with Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Professional Biking), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek), Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep), Neilson Powless (EF Training-EasyPost), Romain Bardet (Staff Picnic PostNL) and Laurens De Plus (Ineos Grenadiers). Alaphilippe completed 8th whilst Bardet used to be twelfth.

The victory on Sunday confirmed very good shape for 21-year-old Morgado as he units his points of interest on some other house race, Volta ao Algarve, later this week.

The way it opened up

The Figueira Champions Vintage coated 197.2km of rolling terrain alongside and close to the central coast of Portugal. A mixture of 9 Spanish and Portuguese riders shaped the early breakaway – Javier Ibañez (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Nil Gimeno (Equipo Kern Pharma), Nicolás Alustiza (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Rafael Reis (Anicolor-Tien 21), Jorge Gálvez (Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé), Diogo Narciso and João Medeiros (Credibom-LA Alumnínios-Marcos Automobile), Delio Fernández (APHotels & Hotel-Tavira-SC Farense) and André Ribeiro (GI Crew Conserving-Simoldes-UDO).

The 9 held a four-minute margin as they started the second one part of the race at the end circuit, overlaying the climb of Rua Parque Florestal (2.3km at 7.1%) for the primary of 3 times. On the other hand, as soon as around the class 1 climb, the peloton had already taken again 2:20.

The 9 leaders finished a complete circuit and controlled to push their lead again out to two:45. Lidl-Trek led the peloton with a gradual pace however no rush as they rode thru Figueira da Foz, with 60km and two laps to move.

Hitting the Rua Parque Florestal climb a moment time, Fernández and Narciso pale, leaving seven riders to carry off the price from at the back of, led through Tudor Professional Biking and Equipo Kern Pharma. Such used to be the velocity at the back of that through the mid-point of the two.3km climb, the catch used to be finished and a brand new race started.

Dylan Teuns (Cofidis) Alaphilippe and Morgado had been twitchy and willing to move at the assault however not anything caught. Then Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) made a daring transfer and he opened a 20-second hole with 41km to move.

Michael Valgren (EF Training-EasyPost) and Natnael Tesfatsion (Movistar) gave chase at the back of Ganna as he approached the quick Enforca Cães ascent however they had been merely one thing to attempt at for the peloton. Whilst Ganna survived the climb on his solo price, Valgren and Tesfatsion had been stuck and a brand new focal point emerged at first of the overall lap to near down the 43 seconds to the Italian.

As soon as Ganna used to be stuck, alternatives to make any important strikes had been fading. Passing thru an intermediate dash with 25km to move and serving as a sign for the overall climb of Rua Parque Florestal, the assaults started to fly. Morgado’s acceleration on the base of the climb proved maximum convincing, as he hunched over his handlebars to struggle for time. He were given an opening, scaring his competitors at the back of.

With simply 10km final, Mikkel Frølich Honoré (EF Training-EasyPost) and Jon Aguirre (Euskaltel-Euskadi) joined forces so to succeed in the younger Portuguese rider. They had been stuck too through a discounted peloton that appeared hungry to catch Morgado too.

On the other hand he sought after to win on house roads and fought the entire method to the end.
