Biniam Girmay Aims High at Milan-San Remo, the Ultimate Monument, as He Prepares for Comeback at La Primavera

Biniam Girmay will probably be participating in Milan-San Remo this weekend after a spell clear of racing when he turned into a father for a 2nd time, his staff showed on Monday.

The Intermarché-Wanty squad have top hopes for the 2024 Excursion de France inexperienced jersey winner for Saturday. Despite the fact that neither he nor his staff have taken a victory but this season, Girmay positioned smartly within the sprints in his earlier race, the Volta ao Algarve, previous to heading again to Eritrea and lacking a deliberate participation within the Opening Weekend.

“In general, it’s all about the positioning and also about the legs,” Girmay mentioned on the time.

“Sometimes I ask myself – I don’t know how I’m always in a good position. It’s just like a gift. I think I grew up like this because in Eritrea most races are kind of like Belgian races. Corners, left, right, small roads, in the city always.

“We now have downhills like [the Poggio], all the time. We should not have instantly downhills, it is all the time left and proper, small roads. I teach on this type of highway so for me it isn’t an issue.”

Fast forward two more years, and with wins in Gent-Wevelgem, the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France already in his palmares, Girmay will be gunning to be in the running on Saturday, team COO Maxime Segers told Nieuwsblad, even despite a previous month out from racing.

“Definitely, the Monument he goals of essentially the most this 12 months,” Segers said. “All over his absence from the peloton, he was once ready to do his factor at house. You’ll imagine it as an additional altitude coaching camp.

“He trained well, did everything the trainers asked and his values are also good. On Monday, he returned to Europe and flew straight to Milan. That way, he can still explore the course a bit in the coming days.”

As Segers identified, whilst Girmay isn’t Tadej Pogačar (UAE Crew Emirates-XRG), the Intermarché racer’s most sensible placings within the first a part of the season plus his observe document of acting smartly after coaching at house give the staff causes to be expecting a correspondingly cast trip on Saturday.

“On the Poggio, he just came up short in recent years, but on the downhill, he always ended up in a good group,” Segers added. “We hope to see him compete with the very best this time.

“I feel it is the very best race to win of the Monuments however it is also tricky to win,” Girmay argued back in 2023. “So I’m going to simply get ready myself as highest as I will and I’m going to give it the entirety.” Two years on, to pass judgement on from his staff’s feedback, he is making use of the similar method.
